This delights me greatly. Mr. Wesselink and I have known each other since 1917 when we entered as freshmen in the Northwestern Classical Academy at Orange City, Iowa. After four years together there as close friends we went on to Hope College at Holland, Michigan, where we were roommates. Naturally, I came to know him very well. He was a fine student, a gentlemen, and a real friend. Also, I knew his parents and family. They were excellent people. During the years I have followed Mr. Wesselink’s career with interest and pride. While I am far less familiar with his record in government service than you must be, I am confident that one with his character and ability cannot have failed to establish an outstanding career in service with which he has so long been connected. A graduate of Hope College and the University of Michigan Law School, he began practicing law in 1927. He served as Prosecuting Attorney for Ottawa County, Michigan (1931-1938), Chairman of the Michigan Republic Party (1942-1945) and Michigan Attorney General (1945-1946). In 1946, he was appointed as a Justice of the Michigan Supreme Court and served from 1946 to 1970, with three stints as Chief Justice. Two vertical and one horizontal crease. Dear Mr. Pruett: In response to your request of July 29, I am pleased to enclose an autographed photograph for your classroom, with my best wishes for success in your most worthy work with handicapped children. With kindest regards and all good wishes, I am Sincerely yours, George B. Hartzog, Jr. Director.” George B. Hartzog, Jr (1920-2008) was an American attorney and Director of the National Park Service. He was admitted to the bar in South Carolina in 1942 and became an attorney for the General Land Office (now the Bureau of Land Management) in the Department of the Interior in 1945, and six months later transferred to the National Park Service. George moved to field assignments at Great Smoky Mountains and Rocky Mountain National Parks, and then got fame advancing the Gateway Arch project as superintendent of Jefferson National Expansion Memorial from 1959 to 1962. After briefly leaving the service he returned as associate director in 1963 with the promise of succeeding Conrad Wirth in January 1964. As director, he served as Stewart Udall’s main assistant in achieving a remarkably productive legislative program that included sixty two new parks, the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, and the Bible amendment to the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act that led to establishment of the Alaska parks. During his nine-year tenure, he enlarged the service’s role in urban recreation, historic preservation, interpretation and environmental education. George was dismissed in December 1972 after pioneering the Washington Monument Syndrome political tactic, and practiced law in Washington, D.C. until his death. Slightly toned. Powell, Jr. (1907-1998) was appointed Associate Justice by President Nixon. Commissioned on December 9, 1971, he was sworn in on January 7, 1972 and served for 15 years, five months and 19 days before retiring on June 26, 1987. Serving under both Chief Justices Warren Burger and William H. Rehnquist (from 1986), Powell, who had been a moderate before joining the Court, often found himself as the swing vote in a number of important cases. His votes decided the Court’s first confrontations with abortion and affirmative action issues. Before joining the Court, the highlight of Powell’s legal career was becoming President of the American Bar Association in 1964. Shipping – We ship via FedEx and USPS. Shipping charges are calculated at time of payment and are dependent on the number of items purchased and the destination shipping address. Due to the value of most purchases, a signature is required for delivery. This policy limits our ability to ship to PO Boxes.
