He was admitted to the bar in South Carolina in 1942 and became an attorney for the General Land Office (now the Bureau of Land Management) in the Department of the Interior in 1945, and six months later transferred to the National Park Service. George moved to field assignments at Great Smoky Mountains and Rocky Mountain National Parks, and then got fame advancing the Gateway Arch project as superintendent of Jefferson National Expansion Memorial from 1959 to 1962. After briefly leaving the service he returned as associate director in 1963 with the promise of succeeding Conrad Wirth in January 1964. As director, he served as Stewart Udall’s main assistant in achieving a remarkably productive legislative program that included sixty two new parks, the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, and the Bible amendment to the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act that led to establishment of the Alaska parks. During his nine-year tenure, he enlarged the service’s role in urban recreation, historic preservation, interpretation and environmental education. George was dismissed in December 1972 after pioneering the Washington Monument Syndrome political tactic, and practiced law in Washington, D.C. until his death. Slightly toned. On letterhead of the Supreme Court of the United States, Chambers of Justice John M. Harlan to Mr. David Shwalb, Morristown, New Jersey. In full: «In reply to your letter of January 8, I am glad to send you this short note which contains my autograph [item not included].» Accompanied by original typed Supreme Court of the United States envelope. John M. Harlan, Jr. (1899-1971), appointed Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court by President Dwight D. Eisenhower, was sworn in on March 28, 1955, following in the footsteps of his grandfather and namesake, John Marshall Harlan (1833-1911), who served as an Associate Justice from 1877-1911. The younger Harlan had previously served as a Judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals, 2nd Circuit, from 1954-1955. He retired from the Supreme Court on September 23, 1971, just three months before his death on December 29, 1971. Lightly creased with folds, not at signature. Fine condition. Ernst Minor Typed Letter Signed: «Jim» in blue ink on an 8×10 letter. Written to W. Ernst Minor. Features United States Senate letterhead. Dated June 29, 1976. In Full: «It was so good to here from you again. I deeply / appreciate your taking the time to write». The older brother of writer William F. Buckley, James Lane Buckley (1923-2023) defeated both the Democratic and Republican candidates in 1970 and served as Conservative U.S. Senator from New York from 1971-1977. As Senator, he authored the so-called Buckley Amendment, familiar to all educators as the strict limitation on release of student records. His first book, If Men Were Angels: A View from the Senate, was published in 1975. Buckley, who served as President of Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty from 1982-1985, became a Federal Judge, U.S. Court of Appeals, District of Columbia circuit, in 1985. He has been inactive in this position since 1996, although he is still listed as a senior judge. Most recently, he had a copy of his book Saving Congress from Itself (2014) sent to every U.S. Senator office of the 114th Congress. Lightly creased at lower left corner. Normal mailing folds.
