Gray refused to discuss the Watergate matter, right up until his death. In 1972, Gray (1916-2005) wasappointed by President Nixon to be Acting Director of the FBI upon J. Edgar Hoover’s death. FBI Deputy Director W. Mark Felt had hoped he would have been appointed FBI Director.
