MARVIN JONES – TYPED LETTER SIGNED 12/29/1965 – HFSID 309990 MARVIN JONES The judge sends fulsome thanks for a Christmas card, with his handwritten postscript Typed Letter signed: «Marvin Jones», 1 page (folded), 6¼x8½. Washington, D.C., 1965 December 29. On his official letterhead as Senior Judge, United States Court of Claims, to Barbara Norton, Sheraton Park Hotel, Washington, D. C. In full: «To get a beautiful card from a friend during the Christmastime is like being given a magic carpet that somehow lifts the spirit into a finer realm of thought, attitude and action. I want to thank you for conveying to me the feeling of good will and understanding that prompted you to send the message. I believe there is a land where the rainbow never fades, and that the final hope of peace in the world is wrapped up in the words of the ancient prophet – ‘How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of Him who bringeth good tidings, that publisheth peace.’ These things were taught and lived by the Master while He was on Earth. With every good wish to you, cordially.» Handwritten postscript: «I still think you are something special.» John Marvin Jones (1882-1976), a Texas Democrat, served in the US House of Representatives from 1917 to 1940. His first Congressional vote was to declare war on Germany, after which he enlisted in the US Army as a private. As Chairman of the Agriculture Committee from 1931, he played an important role in securing passage of New Deal farm legislation. Appointed to the US Court of Claims by President Roosevelt in 1940, he served on that bench, interrupted only by service on war boards during World War II, until 1964. The federal courthouse in Amarillo is named for him. Lightly stained near bottom and right margin. Tape on verso (folded side, does not affect actual document). Bottoms right corner creased. Otherwise, fine condition. See more material from these signers: MARVIN JONES See more listings in our LAW & ORDER (342) category. Please note that this is an authentically signed item.
